Connecting one of Asia's primary hubs with the rest of the world
The first terminal at the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport came to life in February 1979 due to limited space and facilities offered by Taipei's previous international airport, the Sungshan Airport, which has since become Taipei's domestic airport. Situated about 40km west of Taipei near the northwestern coast of Taiwan in Taoyuan County, the site for the new airport was perfect to suit the present and future needs of a major hub and gateway located at the crossroads of northeast and southeast Asia.

Shortly after the airport's opening however, Taiwan's economy began to boom and thereby attract more foreign investment, trans-shipments and tourism while developing into an industrialized country. As passenger and cargo volume increased dramatically during the airport's first decade of service, plans were being made to expand the airport in order to keep pace with the economic growth and support long-term development and transport demands. The centerpiece of the expansion works of would be an additional terminal (T2) together with its associated apron, roadways, parking lots and ancillary facilities.
TAIWAN TAOYUAN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT SECOND TERMINAL (T2)
Besides its own general requirements, the second passenger terminal complex was also designed to facilitate transit passengers from the first terminal and future planned third terminal. Its central position among the terminals interlinked by a skytrain and shuttle bus allows each terminal to function not only as an independent sector, but also become part of an integrated range of comfortable and spacious shopping/recreational facilities.
With the departure and arrival circulation flow separated by different levels and an overall transit system providing rapid passenger movement, travelers to the second terminal can look forward to expecting a much smoother and more pleasant experience while checking in or out of the airport, and pass the time in the terminal's spacious and bright lobbies formed by 18m by 18m spans and 3.6m modules applied to a magnificent space frame structure.
CECI'S ROLE IN THE EXPANSION PROJECT
CECI was commissioned in August 1988 to draw up a detailed plan for the second stage expansion of the CKS International Airport and since then carried out the overall planning, design and construction supervision of the project, which can be divided into three parts: (1) the second passenger terminal, (2) the apron, roadway, parking lots and associated facilities and (3) the north concourse.
Second Passenger Terminal
The second passenger terminal works include the architectural, structural, electrical, HVAC, sanitary and fire protection, mechanical and bridge boarding works, etc., and is designed to accommodate a peak hour passenger flow of 5,000 passengers and yearly total of 14 million passengers. Major items in the building include check-in counters (158), departure immigration counters (42), security inspection counters (8), arrival immigration counters (58), baggage conveyors (6) custom inspection counters (50) and an airside people mover system (PMS) to facilitate passenger movement between airport terminals.
Apron, Roadway, Parking Lots and Associated Facilities
The expansion works also include parking aprons on both the north and south sides of the terminal having a total area of 30 hectares, and multi-level parking lots on the east and west sides of the terminal having a capacity for 4,500 cars and 90 buses. Other facilities for water supply, sewerage, power supply systems, roads, landscaping, drainage and grading are interconnected with the terminal complex.
North Concourse
Lastly, the north concourse is a linear type arrangement allowing the north apron to park ten Boeing 747 size aircrafts.
FUTURE LONG TERM DEVELOPMENT
In response to the global challenges in becoming one of the primary hubs in Asia, plans for the future expansion of Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport continue to be actively pursued with developments such as the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) links connecting the airport with the Taipei Metropolitan Area and Taiwan High Speed Railway, the third passenger terminal, a third runway and a new cargo handling zone. Step by step, as the wide plot of land which opened to international air service 25 years ago continues to mold and take shape, CECI will be doing its part to allow Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport remain one of the premier aviation centers in the Asia-Pacific Reigion where commerce, recreation and aeronautical technology all become part of one integrated community.
